Biography

John Winter is principal and co-founder of Innovations in Conservation, LLC (ICONS), a US-based consultancy that specializes in conservation finance and biodiversity protection. ICONS assists clients in protecting the habitat of animals and plants and the essential services provided by healthy ecosystems, with particular attention to nature conservation in areas affected by development and resource extraction. He is also a conservation practitioner, having led several non-profit land conservation organizations that together have protected thousands of acres of land in the United States.

Prior to his work in conservation and biodiversity protection, John served as corporate social responsibility director at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), a multinational beverage company. In this role, he integrated social responsibility considerations into the firm’s business practices, with a particular emphasis on improving the quality of life of the company’s thousands of small-scale coffee growers around the world. He also managed GMCR’s activities in climate change, environmental management, community volunteerism, and philanthropy.

John is the co-author of three books on environmental management, including Waste at Work: Prevention Strategies for the Bottom Line, a guide to preventing solid waste in businesses. He holds a master’s degree in resource economics and policy from Duke University’s School of the Environment and a B.A. from Muhlenberg College.
