  1. Introduction by
Greg Cochran, Director of Remediation, Dow Chemical Company

    • Jan Dell, CH2MHill's Vice President, Industrial Business Group:

"Global Water Scarcity and Business Risks"

Companies, civil society and governments are all coming to recognise that management of water resources and effective and efficient water use are essential components of sustainable development. Economic growth is becoming increasingly constrained by water. Water-related risks now pose a potential multi-billion dollar threat to a wide variety of businesses and investors. In the past few years, some multinational corporations have lost their license-to-operate or have had to restrict production growth because of the competition for scarce water resources especially with local communities. Yet few companies think "beyond the factory fence line" and adequately appreciate the full implications and costs of water scarcity risks for their businesses, for their employees, for their markets and for their communities.

This presentation will address the multidimensional risks to business due to global water scarcity, provide a summary of today's global "hot spots" for water scarcity, suggest strategies for reducing risks, and provide examples of progressive approaches that companies are taking to address this critical issue.

  2. Introduction by
Suellen Keiner, Director, Center for the Economy and the Environment at the National Academy of Public Administration

    • Louis Tosi, an attorney with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP:

"Reducing Risk, Shareholder Value — How Legal Considerations Come into Play in Managing the New Directions at EPA"

Sometime lawyers are seen as barriers to "forward looking" corporate environmental policies. Leading Companies are now seeing that: legal considerations play a critical role in shaping corporate environmental policy, bringing value to shareholders, and assisting in getting better results for the environment. On the contrary, legal considerations play a critical role in protecting shareholder value; and when properly brought to bear, they can be consistent with a "forward-looking"sustainable corporate policy.

In his presentation Mr. Tosi will present examples that will demonstrate how a team approach of legal, techno and public affairs experts can result in significantly reduced expenditures, and environmental solutions that serve the public better, and are consistent with the long-term success of the company. He will discuss this approach in the context of USEPA recent reforms on New Source Review, and his experience in Superfund matters.

  3. Introduction by
Phill Hillman at Polaroid, Divisional Vice President, EH&S

    • Steve Percy, AHC Group Senior Associate and former CEO and Chairman of BP America:

Mr. Percy will discuss a UN-sponsored multi-national effort involving thousands of scientists and representatives of the key UN conventions on deserts, wetlands, and other ecosystems valuation.

Steve is chairing this "Business Response Report" of the Millennium Ecosystems Assessment.

As the founder of the AHC Group's Governance and Innovation Workshop Series, Steve will brief our member companies on these findings, and alert the member companies to new developments before the business community.

  4. Introduction by
Bruce Greer, Manager, Environmental Services at Alliant Energy

    • William Slade, the Director of the Environment Division at New York Power Authority:

"Changes in Strategies at the New York Power Authority: A View Across the Last 5 Years"

The Authority, prior to the contemplation of competitive electric markets, was a wholesale power utility operating large plants with very little interaction with customers — customers that were locked in by statute. Pricing was based on the rule of thumb of "80% of avoided cost."

The Authority has changed into a wholesale power utility that has divested itself of nuclear power, taken on a unique role as an energy services provider, has developed leading edge demonstration projects on electric technology, and has drastically revised its philosophy on power plant size, siting and operation.

Drivers for this strategy change rest primarily with expectations of customers in a deregulated market, and the governmental nature of the Authority's charter. Other drivers include the difficulty of siting plants in New York State and New York City.

    • URS, senior experts on Valuation and Sustainable Development programs Luiz Guimaraes, Vice President of Planning and Assurance Services, and Kevin Johnson, Manager of GHG Services:

"Managing Environmental and Financial Risks as Part of Corporate Sustainability Programs"

As the global economy, demands greater use of fossil fuels, corporations are looking for ways to balance economic growth with environmental and social responsibility. Meanwhile, ongoing debates on climate change require managers to understand the risks and opportunities in managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, an area where corporate finance, environmental management and stakeholder outreach intersect.

URS' Kevin Johnson and Luiz Guimaraes will share with AHC members how select URS clients are managing carbon exposure and risks through GHG strategic impact assessments, data management system development, benchmarking analyses, and voluntary monitoring and reporting. Since reliable data systems and GHG inventories are the building blocks of a strategic GHG management program, URS will describe how some of their clients manage and analyze baseline data, develop forecasts, and assess potential regulatory/financial impacts and reduction opportunities to gain confidence and support of stakeholders. The credibility of information leads to increased confidence in reported data, which is essential for communicating corporate responsibility and ultimately benefiting from current and future GHG emissions trading activities worldwide. The integration of GHG strategic management systems with corporate sustainability and reporting will also be discussed.
