Dr. Helena Barton is an anthropologist specialized in assessing the management of corporate responsibility and governance (CR&G) risks. Based in New York, she is helping DNV build its international corporate risk ratings business, encouraging companies to actively improve their management of internal and external CR&G risks through the use of independent assurance and metrics.
CoreRatings is a member of the DNV Group, a leading international provider of services for managing risk.
In addition to developing, testing and delivering innovative risk management tools to companies, Helena has worked closely with global institutional investors to integrate intangibles into their investment analysis and portfolio management. An experienced assessor of corporate responsibility reporting standards, she has served on an international technical advisory board for non-financial reporting assurance. She maintains an ongoing dialogue with corporations, investors, regulators, and NGOs on intangible risk management and contributes to related debates at international conferences and in publications.
Her article, "Leveraging Intangible Assets: How a Rating Can Help Measure and Communicate Performance," was published in the September 2005 issue of the AHC Group's flagship publication, Corporate Strategy Today.
Over the years, Helena has consulted for human rights lawyers, NGOs, and research institutes, as well as the South African Commission on Restitution of Land Rights. She taught at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch (South Africa) while completing her Masters and PhD degrees in anthropology. She also holds a BA Honours from the University of East Anglia (UK) in international development.
She is fluent in English, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish and has basic knowledge of Afrikaans, German, Dutch, and French.
